Must Try Margaritas | Cinco de Mayo

Must Try Margaritas | Cinco de Mayo

It's a chilly Cinco de Mayo here in Bloomington, Indiana... I'd much rather be on the beach somewhere soaking up some sun and sipping on a salty margarita. Since I'm bundled up in a sweater and jeans drinking hot coffee, I thought I'd share some of my favorite cantinas with excellent margaritas around the country.

I prefer my margarita on the rocks with salt. You?

El Barrio - Birmingham, Alabama

This little spot opened up long after I went to college in Bham but I love hanging out here when I'm back in town. I always get the ceviche and a Paloma. I know it's not a margarita but the combination of tequila and grapefruit soda is perfection.

Milagros - Paia, Hawaii

My first job after college was working as an art consultant in Maui. When I had full days off from the gallery I'd often hang out in Paia, a cool surfer town on the North Shore of the Island. Milagros was a favorite spot to grab a drink on the patio and people watch.

Fat Mamas - Natchez, Mississippi

I will be forever indebted to my friend Claire Cothren for introducing me to Fat Mamas. Their famous for tamales and margaritas that will "knock you naked."

Antique Taco - Chicago, Illinois

Crazy good tacos, cocktails, craft beer and antiques all in one place. Their house rosemary margarita is so good! They make different agua frescas daily too that you can add booze to.

La Margarita - Indianapolis, Indiana

Located in the heart of Fountain Square, this traditional Mexican joint has a huge patio and is packed pretty much all the time. They have a stellar rotating beer list too if you're not into margs.

Bubba Garcias - St. Simons Island, Georgia

This place is obviously my number 1 as I am a St. Simons Island native and this joint happens to be my family's operation. I've had everything on the menu at least a dozen times and love it all. My go to order though is spicy pork tacos with pineapple pico with the classic Mac Daddy margarita.

Hope your Cinco de Mayo is warmer than mine. Cheers!
